The Oscar season is upon us. By New Year’s Eve all the contesting films must have screened in a cinema in the United States, then on January 23rd the nominees for the 2023 Oscars are announced. The big night this year is March 10, and the Tropic is gearing up for a big party right here on Eaton Street.
This year is proving to be a bumper year for film. Big non-fiction films are back with Oppenheimer and Killers of the Flower Moon vying for favorite to take best picture. But this year the current third place runner is the very pink comedy film and box office blockbuster Barbie. There’s French murder mystery Anatomy of a Fall, which was passed over by the French film academy as their nominee in favor of the delicious A Taste of Things — some say the choice was a deliberate strategy to force Anatomy into the main Best Picture category.
Another international contender that is much discussed as a Best Picture contender is Zone of Interest, a British film with no English dialogue, but that is not its unique distinction. It is a Holocaust story with no visual violence whatsoever. It’s a stunning piece of cinema. And then there is Past Lives, a tiny Korean love story that just won the prestigious Gotham Award for Best Film.
Over the next few weeks, we will write about contests in other categories, particularly the often neglected International Best Feature, and the Shorts categories. Let’s get the conversation going; it’s a great cinema year, and its going to be a truly great party night at the Tropic. So hold that date. March 10. Have your speech ready!
